The breakthrough came in 1940 when Hogan won his first professional tournament at the North and South Open. This victory was the catalyst for a series of successes, including three consecutive victories at the Asheville Open, Hershey Open, and the North and South Open again. How far did Hogan's kickoff go?

Ben Hogan is known as one of the most consistent players in the history of golf, not only as a pure hitter, but also as a player with a graceful swing. Although he is not known for his distance from the ball, he uses precision and accuracy to dominate the game.

Hogan's perfect timing enabled him to often hit the ball into the ideal position, and when he took his chance, even with the powerful kickoff Sahm. Sam Snead is competing against him.

In modern times, we have easy access to statistics about a player's performance, the distance and accuracy of their kicks. At Hogan's peak, however, these figures were not recorded. So we have to rely on anecdotal evidence from golf historians to make reasonable estimates.

In a 1953 study, Golf Digest looked at tee shots on the 18th hole during the third round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club (which Hogan won). The study was conducted by Robert Trent Jones. Winds were slightly favorable that day and were expected to add an average of 5 to 8 yards. The average kickoff distance (including rolling distance) on the day was 261 yards, while Hogan's kickoff distance was 266 yards and Slider's was 290 yards.

While this is just data for one hole, one day, specific weather and ground conditions, it provides a reasonable clue.

In 1949, a Time magazine article mentioned that Hogan's kickoff distance was 265 yards, which is consistent with a 1953 Trent Jones study. In a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf tournament in the 1960s, Hogan's tee shot was still around 265 yards.

At the 1950 Merion U.S. Open, Hogan used a 1-iron to hit the green on the 18th hole, which was 458 yards long and Hogan hit from about 200 yards. That means his kickoff distance is about 258 yards. It's worth noting that his kickoff distance may have been reduced by a few yards due to injuries he suffered in a car accident a year ago, again suggesting that his normal kickoff distance is around 265 yards.

While we can't know for sure, it's reasonable to speculate that Hogan's average kickoff return during the peak of his career was about 265 yards.
