DeChambeau's unique training method

DeChambeau's YouTube channel is very popular, with nearly 700,000 subscribers, and he often shares his special training methods with his fans.: “Specifically, I want to hit the ball farther, and the fastest way to increase distance is to change the trajectory from a right to a left curve. Think of the way the left curve is created, because there is less backspin leaving the clubface, the left curve ball rolls farther than the right curve, and after landing, the ball is more likely to roll rather than stop. Because of this, I started practicing a powerful little left-curve swing and the results have been dramatic. Now, my 1-wood swing speed is 129 mph, 12 mph faster than when I first turned pro, and I averaged 330.5 yards off the tee at the PGA Championship in May. Now, what makes it even more exciting is that I'm building a 1-wood that more perfectly matches my new swing.”

Stance Preparation

“I've found that a lot of players who hit a big right curve share a common problem: they stand with their hips and shoulders open (aiming to the left side of the target line for right-handed players), as if they've intentionally dialed in a right-curve pattern in their stance. In reality, they should be aiming their shoulders and hips to the right side of the fairway, which will help you hit an inside-out swing path that creates a left-curve to the ball. The alignment of the stance to the target line is to make sure everything matches. You can check this by placing the shaft of your 1-wood across your shoulders, hips and in front of your feet. If a body part isn't touching the shaft and is more open or closed compared to the rest, it's just not realistic to hit a consistent trajectory trajectory. Also, pay attention to ball position. Keeping the ball closer to the left side (for right-handed players) leaves enough time for the club to close relative to your swing path. When hitting with a 1-wood, if the ball position is in the middle of your feet, this is tantamount to presetting a pattern of easier right curves before you swing. A good stance is the foundation for success.”

Wide reach to create distance

“To create and reserve more power for the tee shot, I would feel my chest turn away from the target during the backswing, my arms would stay as wide extended as possible, and as my body stretched toward the sky, I would feel like I was doing my best to throw the club forward and away. The more I stretch my muscles in the backswing, the more I can contract the ball at impact, like popping a rubber band. A good way to think about your swing is to stretch wide and contract fast. In your backswing, visualize your body turning to your right side and feel the pressure from your right foot to your right hip. At the same time, keep your arms wide and even feel some stretch in your elbow joints. As you begin your downswing, the club feels as if it's falling and moving toward your body, which creates a force known as angular momentum.”

Flat and shallow downswing - the right way

“In order to hit a lefty curveball, you're going to have to create the inside-out swing path correctly, which requires making your downswing flat and shallow, but a lot of instructional videos on the Internet have some misconceptions about this. Let me show you the correct way to do this. Once you've completed a nice and wide turn in your backswing, start your downswing by feeling your back remain facing the target holding on for one more beat while dropping your hands toward the right pocket of your pants. This will shallow your swing plane and allow the club to perfectly enter the inside-out path you need to hit a left-curve shot. For players who often hit right curves, this move may feel very different from what you're normally used to. It may even be intimidating because you instinctively feel that swinging the club to the right side of the target will necessarily worsen the right curve. In fact, it's quite the opposite. A good feeling is for your right elbow to drop straight down from the apex and touch your right hip. Once you get there, aggressively rotate your arms and pass through to touch the ball. (Low handicap golfers should try to keep their left arm stabilized as I mentioned earlier.)”

Strive for more frequent 1-wood sweet spot shots

“The ability to hit the ball with the sweet spot on the clubface is a huge factor in distance. I don't care how fast the club swings, by not being able to make sweet spot shots you are losing a tremendous amount of energy that could have been delivered to the ball. My advice, especially for players who consistently struggle with consistency, is that a lot of your practice time at the range should be focused on finding the sweet spot. One of my favorite social media videos is a tip for training this. Take two tees, insert them on either side of the head of one wedge, and place a ball in the center. Slice a few balls with the goal of not touching the two tees, which will help you find the feel of hitting the ball in the sweet spot of the clubface. If you can easily accomplish this with a wedge, try a full swing through this wicket with your irons. Eventually, gradually work your way up to using a 1-wood. Monitor your success rate, if you can hit 5 clean 1-wood shots in a row, I'm guessing your handicap will drop to about 10, and if you can hit 10 in a row, your handicap will definitely drop to smaller single digits. If you can routinely do a wide backswing, embed your right elbow in the side of your body, and give your body and club an inside-out trajectory of movement, then you've mastered all of the elements needed for my powerful little left fly. Next, enjoy a new, longer distance tee shot!”
