Ruoning Yin wins again!!

Recently, the LPGA Tour continued its Asian schedule and welcomed the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is a relatively young competition in the LPGA schedule. It was founded in 2023 and this year is the second. In the first competition in 2023, French player Celine Boutier defeated Thai player Jeeno Thitikul in the playoff to win the championship. This year, the total prize money of the event is 3 million US dollars. The venue is Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, West Course, and a total of 78 players participated. Celine Boutier will play as the defending champion. She tied for 9th in the Buick LPGA Championship in Shanghai and won the runner-up in the BMW Women's Championship in Korea in the past two weeks. She is in excellent form. After winning the Buick LPGA Championship, Ruoning Yin went to Korea to participate in the BMW Women's Championship and tied for 14th. Currently, Ruoning Yin is ranked fourth in the world and seventh in the CME annual ranking. She also participated in this competition.

First round

Japanese player Mao Saigo took a one-shot lead after the first round of the Malaysia Championship. Mao Saigo started from the focus group and made a 15-foot putt on the second hole, starting a crazy birdie mode. She scored a total of 6 birdies in the first nine holes, scoring 30 strokes, including 4 consecutive birdies from the fifth to the eighth holes. She made 12-foot putts on the fifth and eighth holes, and the putt on the seventh hole was the most exciting, with a 45-foot long putt. Her hot putts continued on the back nine holes, with putts on the 10th and 11th holes both over 12 feet. She made a 20-foot putt on the 15th hole to score and become the sole leader, and then she chipped the ball from outside the green to the hole on the 16th hole to get a dead birdie, with a score of -10. However, she made a mistake on the 17th hole. She hit the ball into the rough on the edge of the green, then her chip went wrong and she hit it too far, the ball rolled down the slope into the rough on the other side, and she ended up with a bogey on the hole. Haeran Ryu of South Korea birdied the last two holes, including a 10-foot birdie putt on the last hole, and shot 64, ranking second. Ruixin Liu of China started from the back nine holes, and she putted in a 20-foot long putt on the seventh hole, grabbing her eighth birdie of the day, and her score reached -8, climbing to the top of the list, but she struggled in the last two holes. She putted in a 15-foot putt on the eighth hole and successfully saved par, but she didn't hit the green on the last hole, missed the 10-foot par putt, and took the only bogey of the day, shooting 65. Maja Stark of Sweden putted in an 8-foot eagle putt on the last hole, shot 66, and tied for fifth place with five other players. Ruoning Yin hit a 6-foot tee shot on the par-3 15th hole to grab her fifth straight birdie, bouncing back from a mediocre first nine. She made a 35-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole to get birdie, shooting 67 and tied for 11th place with defending champion Celine Boutier and others. Janet Lin shot 69 and tied for 26th.

Moving Day

Since the 8th hole in the second round, Ruoning Yin has not made a bogey in 47 consecutive holes, and has scored 17 birdies, including 5 consecutive birdies after the transition in the second round. Ruoning Yin shot 66 strokes with 6 birdies and bogeys, and with a total score of -16, she is tied for the lead with Haeran Ryu and Jeeno Thitikul at 54 holes. Ruoning Yin, who shot -5 for two consecutive rounds, still performed steadily on the moving day. She did not make a bogey in the whole game and scored 6 birdies! Especially in the "first half", Ruoning Yin scored 4 birdies in a row from holes 3 to 6, and her competitive state was quite good. After entering the "second half" with a score of -4, Ruoning Yin scored par for 4 consecutive holes, and then welcomed the fifth birdie of the moving day on the 14th hole. When everyone thought that Ruoning Yin would finish the game with a score of -5 for three consecutive rounds, she made another birdie on the 18th hole on the moving day and finished with a single round score of -6. Of course, it was not without a scare to maintain the "0 bogey golden body". On the 16th hole, Ruoning Yin made a mistake and hit the tee shot into the bushes, but in the end, she successfully saved par on this par 4 hole with a wonderful long putt that amazed everyone. "I think I will treat myself to ice cream on this hole." After the game, she laughed and talked about her interesting exchange with her caddie Dave Jones on this hole. "I decided to save the ball to the left. After measuring the distance, he suggested that I hit it from the middle of the woods. I said: 'Brother, this is not feasible. Let's hit it out of the woods and try to save par with a putt. " "He then said to me: 'Then use a putt to solve all problems!' The result was very good." Ruoning Yin told the official LPGA reporter after the game that she wanted to treat her caddie to "a drink" just because of this sentence. "I had a good start today, with some good putts in the first six holes, but then the momentum slowed down. Even though I had a lot of birdie opportunities, I didn't get another birdie until the 14th hole," Ruoning Yin said after the game. "My caddie told me to be patient. As long as you do the right things, the birdies will come. I'm really happy and I did a good job." Ruoning Yin tied with Haeran Ryu and Jeeno Thitikul for the lead in the Maybank Championship 54 holes with a total score of -16.

Finals

Ruoning Yin won the $3 million Malaysia Championship on Sunday at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club with a 4-foot birdie putt, defeating Jeeno Thitikul and Haeran Ryu, who were in the last group. She received a $450,000 championship check. This is Ruoning Yin's third LPGA victory this season and her fifth LPGA victory. Her four-round score was 265 (67-67-66-65), 23 strokes under par, surpassing last year's winning score of 267. Ruoning Yin tied for the lead with Jeeno Thitikul and Haeran Ryu at the start of the finals, but she made a 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole, and a total of 4 birdies in the first nine holes, scoring 32 strokes. When she entered the back nine holes, she had already gotten rid of the other two players and became the sole leader. After the transition, Ruoning Yin hit the hole 2 feet from the hole on the 10th hole and made birdie, taking a 2-stroke lead. Although the players behind her were chasing closely, Ruoning Yin made another wonderful attack on the 13th hole, hitting the green 3 feet and making a birdie. Although Ruoning Yin did not score in the next few holes, she performed steadily, hitting the green with pars and saving pars, ensuring her leading position. On the last hole, a par 5, Ruoning Yin hit the edge of the green with her second shot and putted eagle to 4 feet. When Jeeno Thitikul missed the eagle putt and tied with birdie, she calmly put in a 4-foot putt to birdie again and won by one stroke. Jeeno Thitikul, a 21-year-old Thai player, lost to Celine Boutier in a nine-hole playoff last year. She shot 66 in the final round and finished second for the second consecutive year. She finished 266 (67-69-64-66) in four rounds, 22 strokes under par. This time she sent her blessings to Ruoning Yin and splashed water on her after the latter won the championship. "I was really nervous at the last moment, and Jeeno Thitikul played really well, and she inspired me to play my best. It was a great day on the golf course and a great match with my friends," said Ruoning Yin as she walked off the 18th green. South Korean player Haeran Ryu made a 6-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole to narrow the gap to 1 stroke, but a bogey at the critical moment on the 17th hole narrowed the gap to 2 strokes again. She made a two-putt birdie on the last hole and shot 67 for the second consecutive day. The four-round score was 267 (64-69-67-67), 21 strokes under par, ranking third. Blue Bay Masters champion Bailey Tardy shot 65 and tied for fourth place with Maja Stark (70 strokes), but they were not likely to compete for the championship, lagging by as many as 7 strokes. Wei-Ling Hsu, a player from Chinese Taipei, made a hole-in-one on the par-3 11th hole, and caught two birdies in the closing three holes, shooting 68 strokes, and tied for sixth place with 273 strokes (65-68-72-68), 15 strokes under par. Ruixin Liu caught a birdie on the fifth hole, but unfortunately took a double bogey on the par-3 11th hole, and handed in 73 strokes in the final round, with a four-round score of 278 strokes (65-72-68-73), 10 strokes under par, and the ranking dropped to a tie for 22nd place. Janet Lin started from the back nine holes, and after the transition, she caught birdies on the first and fifth holes, but unfortunately lost a stroke on the par-3 eighth hole at the end, shooting 71 strokes, and a four-round score of 284 strokes (69-74-70-71), 4 strokes under par, and tied for 56th place.

Champion introduction

Ruoning Yin, born on September 28, 2002 in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is a Chinese female golfer. In 2013, she entered the golf training class organized by the Yunnan Golf Association and began to learn golf. In 2015, Ruoning Yin won the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship Women's Group B Championship. On May 20, 2016, Ruoning Yin won the championship in the 11-14 years old women's group of the 9th Mission Hills Jack Nicklaus Junior Championship. On August 21, 2020, Ruoning Yin won the Zhuhai Hollywood Square Challenge. On April 3, 2023, Ruoning Yin won her first LPGA title at the LPGA Tour Los Angeles Open. On June 26, at the Women's PGA Championship held in New Jersey, USA, Ruoning Yin won her first Grand Slam title. On September 11, at the LPGA Queen City Championship held in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, Ruoning Yin won the third place and successfully topped the world ranking of women's golf, becoming the second Chinese mainland female golfer to top the world ranking. Ruoning Yin started to fight in the LPGA in 2022, and made a breakthrough in 2023, winning two LPGA victories, including a Grand Slam-Women's PGA Championship, and the world ranking also topped the list. Because of this, Ruoning Yin put a lot of pressure on herself when she started the 2024 season. "Because my results were very good last year, I always wondered if I could win again at the beginning of this year, what if I couldn't win, and so on." Ruoning Yin said frankly after the game. It was not until May this year that Ruoning Yin had to withdraw from the competition for the first time in her career due to a wrist injury. This injury experience made her feel her love for golf, and she began to understand that no matter what the goal is, playing happily and enjoying the game is the most important thing. After the change of mentality, Ruoning Yin began to focus on every swing on the court, and her performance also improved significantly accordingly. First, she partnered with Jeeno Thitikul at the end of June this year to win the only official LPGA team competition, the Dow Championship, and then this month, she won two wins in three weeks at the Buick LPGA Championship and the Maybank Championship. With three wins in a single season, Ruoning Yin has become another "triple crown" this season after Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko, and Hannah Green. At the age of 22, she is also the youngest one among them. I still remember that in 2019, Ruoning Yin, who was still an amateur player at the time, won a wild card to participate in the Buick LPGA Championship with her outstanding performance in Buick Junior Golf, thus completing her first appearance on the Women's PGA Tour. In just five years, Ruoning Yin has risen rapidly, from the best amateur player of the Buick LPGA to the five-time LPGA champion, and has become a representative figure of the new generation of Chinese golf. But we know that her story is not over yet, and the legend continues... Let us congratulate Ruoning Yin again! Looking forward to witnessing the championship style at the Buick LPGA Championship next fall!
